When I was a little girl I always loved to spend time with my Grandmother. everyone called her Nanny (EVEN HER CHILDREN). I remember sitting on a stool in her kitchen watching her cook, Talking with her, and being the taster for the dishes she would make. I will never forget how her bathroom always smelled of DOVE soap.

Healing our Community

“One Plate at a time”

Nanny’s Kitchen runs a 12-week Food Justice Program for young people in Harlem, and Community members who want to make healthier, cost efficient, time effective decisions about the food they purchase and prepare for themselves and their families.

Participants Prep for their food handlers license, culinary diploma and the ability to run their own kitchens.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU??

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Participants will learn proper food handling and kitchen safety.

  • Participants will learn how to read labels and do comparison shopping.

  • Participants will learn cooking techniques that they can use repeatedly.

POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS

  • Participants will make new peer relationships.

  • Participants will form positive relationships with adult professionals.

COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTIONS

  • Participants will be youth leaders for their community.

  • Participants will learn how they can give back to their community.

  • Participants will have pathways to employment.

While other programs target youth and adults separately for employment in the food service industry, this program is unique because it specifically targets both Justice involved youth, and the Senior community; with a secondary focus on building, and repairing relationships.

Online programs, and six-week programs are alright training for those who seek employment, or culinary training. But this program is 12-weeks of in person, hands on, FREE Training, which builds not only healthy food habits, but also healthy relationships, and communities. We are closing old Wounds, and opening new doors.
